In order to be healthy, it is important that we live a balanced life. A balanced life means different things to different people, and perhaps we don’t even really understand what balance is. If we look at it the terms of a scale, we know that in order to not have the item collapse off the scale they must be even on both sides, the same can be said about our lives.

When our lives our out of balance, we can often see this reflected in some form of either our health or lifestyle. We don’t eat as healthy, we don’t get enough sleep, we have no time for play or family or friends and perhaps we even feel unhappy or even depressed.

It is common in today’s society to “Live to Work” and not “Work to Live.” Where we spend more than the considered full time of 40 hours a week and are putting in more like 60 or in some cases even 80 hours a week. Even for those of us where our job is our passion, and even if we are lucky enough to not consider it “work” there still needs to be balance.

Balance can come in many forms, whether its the balance of work and play, activity and relaxation, happy and sad, there is an opposite to everything. Its been said that you there can’t be love without hate. We need to know the opposite in order to appreciate the opposite and finding this balance in all areas of our lives leaves us feeling, well, balanced!

Balance is the taking of appropriate action when circumstances dictate so as to maintain equilibrium. When it comes to a concept or principle such as balance it is important to understand that between different people and even from moment to moment balance is always going to be different. My definition of balanced and your definition of balanced are different, the only thing that is certain at anytime in life is change. Change will always happen, and we sometimes have to modify our own definition of balance in the face of change.

With too much to do and with too little time to do it, anxiety and stress replaces happiness most of the time. However, there is hope, because the ability to change our lives exists in all of us. We just need to learn how to become more balanced.

Living a balanced life is the ability to take all that life throws at us from our careers, home, health and everything else, and put it in a central location so we can reframe it in order to better understand it, learn from it and grow from it.

So how do you do it? Simple, sit down have a look at your schedule and find time to even schedule the opposites in to your schedule. For example, you are working a 40 hour week this week, find 4 hours sometime this week to PLAY and schedule it in.
