Fight the Flu
It's the water cooler topic of choice; to take or not to take the H1N1 vaccine. That it seems to be a topic of controversy reflects the sign of times - more people want to make informed decisions when it comes to their health then ever before.
The Back To Wellness Centre health professionals would like to offer you some effective and proven tips to keep your immune system strong.
Whether you will or have taken the vaccine or have decided not to - the following will ensure your army of immune system cells are strong on the battle ground.
- Food as Medicine
This is perhaps the simplest way to keep up your defense. When planning meals, snacking or picking off a menu remember the power foods. Garlic, onions, ginger - all easy to add to those warm wintery soups, stews, and stir fries. Colourful variety of fruits and vegetables - broccoli, peppers, pomegranate, beets, grapes, etc will provide you with antioxidants which protect cells from foreign invaders and damage.
- Rest and Stress Management
Be disciplined in both respects. Low on either leads to a weakened immune system. If your organ systems do not get enough time to rejuvenate, their fighting ability is weak; organs such as lungs, stomach, kidneys all require rest for their role in filtering, detoxifying, and defending your body as a whole.
Remind yourself periodically to stop and take in some deep breaths to ensure adequate oxygen levels and a rested mind and body. Poor rest and high stress are powerful obstacles for the immune system and should not be underestimated.
- Supplement, supplement, supplement!
There are numerous studies that prove the effect of some of nature's most powerful antibiotics and viral fighting agents. This is the time to get started or restarted. To name just a few: Turmeric (yellow curry powder), Oregano Oil, Vitamin D, Zinc, and Vitamin C. Intravenous vitamin therapy is also available which allows administration of high doses of Vitamin C and other nutrients without a toxic effect causing bowel disturbances.
For children - use of these are beneficial but dosing should be advised by your health care provider. Back To Wellness Centre uses a wide range of homeopathic medicines for the flu and respiratory conditions which do not have toxic effects; safe for pregnant women and women who are nursing as well.
- Movement
There is no shortage of benefits from regular activity. Exercising your body improves your blood and lymphatic circulation which is the transporter of immune system cells. If pain or a health condition is minimizing your activity levels, speak to the team at back to wellness centre about an adaptive activity and addressing the route of your ailment.
