Acute And Chronic Pain Treatment

The health team at Back to Wellness Centre works together to provide the best possible care in a compassionate and professional health care environment for patients suffering from Acute and Chronic Pain Treatment. Patients can choose to engage one or more practitioners of their choice or we can recommend a team that will best address their individual concerns.

Under the disciplines below is a description of how each team member at our clinic can be part of the road to recovery.

Chiropractic Care

Acute joint and/or tissue injury can be caused by a single traumatic event, such as improper lifting of a heavy object, or through repetitive stresses, such as sitting in an awkward position with poor spinal posture for an extended period of time. In either case, injured tissues undergo physical and chemical changes that can cause inflammation, pain, and diminished function for the sufferer and if not treated right away can turn into a chronic condition.  Manipulation, or adjustment of the affected joint and tissues, restores mobility and function, thereby alleviating pain and muscle tightness, and allowing tissues to heal.  In addition rehabilitation exercises are included in the program to facilitate a pro-active approach.

Massage Therapy

Massage therapy is the assessment and treatment of soft tissue injuries of the body.  The primary aim of therapy is to break up adhesions in the muscle tissue and like other forms of massage increase circulation and lymph flow to that area. Adhesions are areas where the muscle tissue is bound together forming rigid bands of tissue often referred to as knots. Massage Therapy is an effective non-toxic modality used to reduce acute and chronic pain as well as stress and tension.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture, among the oldest healing practices in the world, is part of traditional Chinese medicine. Acupuncture practitioners stimulate specific points on the body—most often by inserting thin needles through the skin. In traditional Chinese medicine theory, this regulates the flow of qi (vital energy) along pathways known as meridians. This type of treatment has been shown clinically to trigger the central nervous system to release pain-relieving chemicals, such as endorphins. Those that are afraid of needles have the option to have needle-less acupuncture treatment.

Naturopathic Medicine

Naturopathic Doctors approach patients suffering from acute and chronic pain with an overall assessment, working to target the nature and source of the pain before determining an appropriate treatment.  They also will consider any systemic or organic causes. If the pain occurs on both sides of the body and in multiple locations, the doctors will look to see if there is an underlying disease. If the pain is specific to one location, it’s more likely to have resulted from an injury or strain on the muscle and tissue. Treatment modalities can include natural anti-inflammatories, dietary changes, homeopathic medicine, detox program or a combination of these.

Inflammation (eg. joint swelling, eczema, migraines, general body aches) and pain are almost one in the same. Our Naturopathic Doctors quickly determine the various causes of inflammation in their patients via blood tests, specialized functional lab tests, and applied kinesiology testing of foods, environmental toxins, trees/grass pollens. Through our specialized treatment protocol – BIE – patients quickly see pain and inflammation subside.

Counselling

Pain can have a number of important unconscious processes.  It can distract us from or allow us to avoid unpleasant situations, or a way to get needed attention, or provide a sign to let us know that something in our mental or emotional life is not on target and needs to be addressed.  Counsellors work with the individual to identify underlying issues and help to develop healthier solutions for coping with pain and illness.
